More than 10,000 kilometres in just two weeks: from Tokyo to New York, PDO buffalo mozzarella is pressing ahead with its international promotional tour. Following its participation in an EU Commission-led trade mission to Japan, the Italian cheese has arrived at the Summer Fancy Food Show in New York, North America’s leading agri-food exhibition, taking place at the Jacob Javits Convention Center from June 29 to July 1.
The Consortium for the Protection of Mozzarella di Bufala Campana PDO will be present at stand No. 2523 within the official Italian Pavilion, as it continues to strengthen its presence in a market that already represents between 7% and 10% of its total exports, equivalent to nearly €20 million annually.
While U.S. tariffs on European specialty foods remain frozen until at least July 9, following a temporary suspension by President Donald Trump, the industry remains cautious.

“Regardless of current volumes, the risk of new tariffs must be taken seriously,” said Consortium President Domenico Raimondo. “They would significantly hamper growth opportunities in the U.S., especially in the Horeca sector, where PDO buffalo mozzarella is considered a premium product and enjoys strong demand among quality-focused restaurateurs.”
As part of its U.S. outreach, the Consortium is hosting a series of public-facing events to highlight the artisanal nature of the cheese. At GrowNYC’s Union Square Greenmarket—the most prominent farmers’ market in New York—live demonstrations and tastings will be held, featuring master cheesemaker Mimmo La Vecchia, who will showcase the traditional spinning technique behind fresh buffalo mozzarella.
