Sammontana Takes Over La Rocca Creative Cakes

Sammontana Italia has acquired La Rocca Creative Cakes, a Canadian producer of premium cakes, desserts, and frozen pastries for the in-store bakery retail sector. The deal, executed through the newly formed Sammontana North America, marks the Italian group’s first major step in its international expansion strategy, focusing on organic growth and targeted acquisitions in the dessert, gelato, and frozen pastry markets.

NORTH AMERICAN MARKET SYNERGIES

The addition of La Rocca is expected to create strategic synergies with Bindi, Sammontana’s existing brand in North America, which primarily serves the foodservice sector. The acquisition strengthens Sammontana’s presence in Canada and the US, reinforcing its position in the frozen pastry and in-store bakery segments.

DRIVING GROWTH AND INTERNATIONAL EXPANSION

Sammontana Italia CEO Alessandro Angelon said the deal would support the company’s “ambitious growth and internationalization strategy,” citing strong alignment in values and business approach between the two firms. “Expertise in the dessert segment, a commitment to high-quality ingredients, and an Italian heritage of craftsmanship are key factors that will drive the success of this partnership,” he said.

LA ROCCA: A LEGACY OF CRAFTSMANSHIP AND EXPANSION

Founded nearly 40 years ago by Lina Givens and Harvey Easson, alongside their sons Marty and Michael, La Rocca Creative Cakes has grown into one of Canada’s leading premium dessert producers. Under the leadership of Michael Givens over the past 25 years, the company has expanded significantly while maintaining high standards of quality and innovation. Based in Toronto, La Rocca produces over 120,000 cakes per week, supplying major North American retailers. In 2024, it generated more than C$70 million in revenue.

CONTINUITY IN LEADERSHIP AND FUTURE PROSPECTS

Michael Givens, President and CEO of La Rocca, will remain at the helm as the company enters this new phase. He welcomed the acquisition, citing “strong growth opportunities and a shared passion for high-quality desserts and excellence.” The deal is expected to close in March, subject to customary approvals.
