Promoting organic tomato preserves by emphasizing sustainability, health benefits, and taste is the core mission of Anicav (The Italian Association of Canned Vegetable Producers), which is taking part in the 2024 Nordic Organic Food Fair, Northern Europe’s largest industry event, held in Stockholm as part of the ‘Red Gold From Europe—Your Organic and Sustainable Choice!’ initiative.

Organic tomato preserves are increasingly important to the industry supply chain, driven by growing consumer awareness of product quality and environmental concerns. This trend is particularly pronounced in Northern Europe, especially in the project’s four target markets: Sweden, Germany, the Netherlands, and Denmark.

The Nordic Organic Food Fair is a valuable international platform for showcasing our top-tier products, which are recognized globally,” says Giovanni De Angelis (pictured), Anicav’s general director. “About 75% of Italy’s organic tomato production is exported. We aim to increase consumption and expand market share in our key target countries. Domestic demand is also rising, but the challenge ahead is to appeal to younger consumers by focusing on key factors such as trust in certification processes, which should drive sales growth and ultimately help reduce costs.”

THE ORGANIC PRESERVE MARKET

In Italy, more than 8% of tomato-growing acreage has been dedicated to organic production in recent years, accounting for about 7% of total processed tomatoes. Following a difficult 2023, marked by a sharp drop in production due to adverse weather conditions, 2024 has seen a return to strong quality in organic yields, with production expected to grow.
