Italy is the second European country among the major exporters of extra virgin olive oil to Japan, with a 37% share of the EU total exports. Japan is the largest consumer of this condiment among Asian countries and the eighth largest importer in the world.
In the last five years, evo oil exports to Japan have increased by +22%, reaching in 2019 a total of 72,844 tons for a value of 35,331 million yen (equal to 289.5 million euros). About 89% of imported olive oil comes from Europe. Italy comes second behind Spain, which accounts for 59% of EU countries’ total exports to Japan.

These data were provided by the Italian Chamber of Commerce in Japan (IccJ) which has just announced the winners of the IX edition of Joop (Japan Olive Oil Prize), proclaiming the best oils among almost 500 participating labels from 20 countries. The selection proclaimed the winners in the PGI, PDO, Organic, Monocultivar, Blend, and Flavored categories.
