In 2019 Salame Felino PGI sales recorded a total turnover of around 75 million euros, in line with the result achieved in 2018. According to the data provided by ECEPA – the Agency for the Certification of Agri-food Products – given a slight reduction of processed meat (5.03 million kg in 2019), in the last 12 months there was a +3.9% increase in labeled production.
The large-scale retail trade is confirmed as the major marketing channel. Salame Felino is still the preferred cured meat by consumers. The pre-sliced segment is stable, accounting for 17.4% of total production. As far as exports (which account for about 20% of the sector’s total turnover) are concerned, Salame Felino PGI is mainly appreciated in the EU area, particularly in France and Germany.
FROM 2019 TO 2020, A GOOD PERIOD FOR SALAME FELINO PGI
Speaking on behalf of the Consortium for the Protection of Salame Felino PGI, which brings together 14 companies in the Parma area that employ more than 500 people, is President Umberto Boschi. “Last year was in line with our expectations. We can consider it a positive year, taking into account the tensions in the meat market, with a significant increase in raw materials mainly linked to the increase in demand for pork meat in China. The current year has started in a positive way: however, it is still too early to make reliable forecasts, in light of the coronavirus emergency, which could have repercussions on the market. Brexit is not a particular concern, as the transitional trade regime will continue in 2020” – Mr Boschi said.
