Vinegar adds flavor to American cooking

Thanks to versatility, vinegar rises to number two among favorite packaged grocery categories

Vinegar and cooking wine are the two top preferred grocery products in US supermarkets, according to a research by Nielsen. The top 10 packaged grocery categories from the center of the store sees liquid tea as the number one, followed at distance by liquid coffee, honey, herbs and spice seasoning, water, salty snacks, candy, and cookies.

THE POPULARITY OF ACETO BALSAMICO

Vinegar, which include the increasingly popular Aceto Balsamico di Modena, recorded a 12.4% increase in dollar sales in 2017, and a 5% increase in units sold, according to Nielsen. The reason behind the success is the versatility that vinegar brings to the table. In addition to salads, American consumers are learning to use balsamic vinegars on meats, vegetables, and cheese, let alone desserts and cocktails. Glazes are also gaining market share, used as a topping on almost any meal.

THE WORLD OF VINEGAR

American grocers are increasing their assortment of vinegars as consumers learn about new ways to prepare their food. Among the trending products is apple cider vinegar, appreciated for its healthy properties. Some researches show that any sort of vinegar can help reduce the levels of sugar as acidity prevents the absorption of starch. The category includes white and red wine vinegars, pomegranate, and even distilled vinegars. When it comes to losing weight, apple or other vinegars are often added to diet along with exercise and a healthy lifestyle. Fans of vinegars are also learning about the versatility of this product, that can be used to preserve and wash food, as an all-purpose natural cleaner, and for specific skin treatments.
