The first step to opening the Taiwanese market to Italian apples concerns South Tyrol and Piedmont, but not Verona which according to Istat data in 2017 will shed 1,717 out of 2,368 tons of apples collected in Veneto. The Ferrara fruit and vegetable Center has recently revealed in an official statement that a few days ago two Taiwanese plant health inspectors visited some of the main Italian apple areas. The goal is to sign a bilateral agreement enabling the opening of the important South-East Asian market to Italian apples. With 23 million inhabitants, Taiwan is considered an interesting market for Italian apples. The agri-food and fruit and vegetable sectors have a great potential for development, as already shown by the export of kiwi. Taiwan pays great attention to products’ high quality and safety, as a result of a series of food scandals emerging in recent years in China. The inspection visit ended at the Ministry of Agriculture Policies with a confrontation with the head of the National Health Service Bruno Faraglia. The outcome leaves hope for a positive conclusion for Taiwan’s market entry in time for the 2018 apple season.
