From January to November 2014 the turnover generated by Italian tomatoes preserves export has increased by more than 3 per cent compared to the previous year, however, the sales volume has lost 3.32%, according to a recent report, based on Istat data, made by Anicav (the Italian association of vegetable preserves).
The EU-28 is still the main destination for shipments, representing 64% of market share in value and 65% in volume, followed by Asia (10% in value and volume) and Africa (9% in value and 7% in volume).
“The drop in volume – says Anicav’s president and ceo at La Doria Antonio Ferraioli– is certainly due to the decline in exports of derivatives with lower added value, such as the paste, which saw a decline in the African market in volume of nearly 30% compared to the same period in 2013. In addition, a lower increase in value (+ 3.41%) has been registered compared to the previous year (+ 6.67% in 2013/2012) which is alarming our industry. The whole Italian system’s loss of competitiveness is also seriously undermining our sector and the leadership that we have diligently secured ourselves”.
