Wine export from Italy, which competes with France for the position of the world’s biggest producer, rose in Us and Asia, while it is stagnant in Europe. In 2014 year, foreign sales grew up of 1,4% in the continent but the trend in other emerging countries was about 2,4% versus o,5% in the Eu-28 market. According to official data from Nomisma, starting from 2000 wine consumption in Eu slows down of 6%, on the contrary export demand for Italian wine rose up to 25% worldwide. Total export sales with US market remains strong. Italian wine export to the Us rose 11.5% to eur 827.3 million last year according to Federevini data. Italy is the number one source of imported wines in the US market according to the Wineeconomist data. In 2013, The United States became the world largest wine market, in term of consumption: the market grew again in 2014 and is expected to add these gains in 2015. Italian wine sales more than doubled also to China to eur 40.7 million.
On the contrary, demand in the domestic market, which accounts for more than two-thirds of the total sales, has dropped last year. Wine consumption in Italy has fallen 10,40 liters per capita now from 45 in 2007, according to the industry data presented at Vinitaly trade fair. Export and domestic markets are equally important for the Italian wine industry but the future of growth would largely depend on expansion of foreign market.
