Cioccolato di Modica PGI recently took center stage at The Spirit of Fine Pairing, an exclusive event held in Brussels. Promoted by spiritsEUROPE in collaboration with the oriGIn EU association, the initiative celebrated the unique synergy between protected geographical indication spirits and iconic European food products.
A unique sensory experience
For this prestigious occasion, the Consortium for the Protection of Cioccolato di Modica PGI presented two carefully selected references: the 60% Dark Chocolate and the 60% Dark Chocolate with Sicilian Citrus. These products were integrated into distinct thematic tasting paths to demonstrate the PGI chocolate’s extraordinary aromatic range and versatility.
In the Taste of Italy area, the Sicilian specialty was paired with esteemed Italian spirits labels, including Amaro Montenegro, Disaronno Originale, and Grappa Cellini. Simultaneously, in the Balkan Traditions section, the chocolate engaged with heritage distillates such as Ouzo, Tsipouro, and Metaxa, offering participants a sophisticated and original sensory journey.
A legacy of excellence
Nino Scivolotele, Director of the Consortium, expressed pride in this achievement. “The participation in ‘The Spirit of Fine Pairing’ is a significant recognition of the value that Geographical Indications bring to the European agri-food landscape,” he stated. “Cioccolato di Modica was the first chocolate in Europe to obtain the PGI status, and it remains the only one to hold this prestigious recognition today, marking a testament to our century-old tradition and the deep bond between the product and its territory.”
The event concluded with an institutional gift for all attendees—a signature bar of Cioccolato di Modica PGI—symbolizing the dedication of a community committed to representing Italian and European culinary heritage on the global stage.
