The European Parliament has officially approved the modernized trade agreement between the European Union and Mexico, marking a significant milestone in strengthening economic ties and trade relations. This deal is particularly crucial for the protection of European Geographical Indications (GIs), providing an enhanced legal framework for some of Italy’s most iconic agricultural and viticultural treasures.
A new era for Geographical Indications
The approved package includes both the Modernized Global Agreement and the Interim Trade Agreement. The latter ensures the immediate application of trade provisions, including the safeguarding of intellectual property rights for European delicacies. This move prevents these names from becoming generic in the Mexican market and introduces robust administrative and judicial measures to combat counterfeiting and improper use.
Italian excellence protected
This parliamentary approval confirms a comprehensive list of European denominations that will enjoy high-level protection. The list includes renowned Italian PDO and PGI products such as Parmigiano Reggiano PDO, Grana Padano PDO, Prosciutto di Parma PDO, Prosciutto di San Daniele PDO, Gorgonzola PDO, Mozzarella di Bufala Campana PDO, Asiago PDO, Fontina PDO, and Taleggio PDO.
The protection also extends to processed products and iconic vine products like Aceto Balsamico di Modena PGI, Mortadella Bologna PGI, Bresaola della Valtellina PGI, Culatello di Zibello PDO, and Provolone Valpadana PDO. Furthermore, legendary wine regions are included, such as Barolo PDO, Brunello di Montalcino PDO, Chianti PDO, Chianti Classico PDO, Franciacorta PDO, Prosecco PDO, and Conegliano Valdobbiadene-Prosecco PDO.
Strategic value for Italian exporters
For international buyers and distributors, this agreement offers greater legal certainty and trust when sourcing authentic Italian products. By effectively shielding high-quality labels from imitation, the European Union is fostering a more transparent market environment. This step forward is essential for maintaining the prestige of Italian craftsmanship and ensuring that consumers in Mexico have access to genuine, high-quality culinary traditions.
