Anicav, Italy’s National Association of Canned Vegetable Industries, is hitting the floor at the 2026 Summer Fancy Food Show in New York. As part of the Greatest Tomatoes from Europe project, co-funded by the European Union, the association is reinforcing the strategic role of Italian canned tomatoes in the North American market, connecting with key buyers, distributors, and food service professionals.

Navigating market challenges

Despite a complex macroeconomic landscape, the United States remains a top-tier destination for Italian producers. In 2025, European exports of preserved tomatoes to the US exceeded 200 million euros, with Italy accounting for over 98% of these shipments. However, the sector has faced headwinds due to recent trade policies, resulting in a 3.7% decline in volume and an 8.12% drop in value compared to the previous year.

Strategic investment in quality

Giovanni De Angelis, General Manager of Anicav, emphasizes the necessity of consistent promotional efforts. The United States is a market we know well and believe in deeply,” De Angelis noted. In this complex phase for exports, characterized by rising competition and the impact of Italian sounding products, continued investment in promotion is fundamental. It allows us to strengthen the narrative of quality that distinguishes our sector.

A global ambassadorship

Founded in 1945, Anicav represents roughly 70% of all tomato processing in Italy and nearly the entire global production of whole peeled tomatoes. With 2025 revenues reaching 3.7 billion euros, the association remains a cornerstone of the Made in Italy identity. As 60% of production is destined for international markets—ranging from the EU to Japan and Australia—these initiatives at the Summer Fancy Food Show serve as a critical bridge between Italian tradition and the evolving demands of the global culinary landscape.
