Despite a complex international landscape characterized by geopolitical tensions and shifting consumer trends, Italian spirits maintain their global appeal. According to data presented at the 80th annual meeting of AssoDistil, the sector achieved a significant milestone in 2025 with total exports reaching €1.7 billion. While this represents a 5% decrease compared to 2024, the Italian industry is demonstrating superior resilience compared to major global competitors, such as France and the United States, which faced sharper double-digit declines.

Strategic diversification and Innovation

The current market phase necessitates a shift in strategy. Italian producers are increasingly focusing on geographical diversification and the modernization of their offerings to meet evolving international demand. Data from Nomisma and Format Research reveal that the weight of the top three destination markets has decreased from 43% in 2019 to 40% in 2025, signaling a successful expansion into new, high-potential regions such as Poland, China, Sweden, and Japan.

The future of Italian distillates

Looking ahead, more than 75% of companies in the sector remain optimistic about the next five years. Development is being driven by three fundamental pillars: digital transformation, process automation, and an unwavering commitment to sustainability. Antonio Emaldi, President of AssoDistil, emphasized that the industry must continue to leverage the heritage and identity of Made in Italy products while embracing new trends such as low-alcohol options and the growing influence of mixology. By focusing on quality and strategic agility, Italian distillers are well-positioned to navigate future market volatility and strengthen their international market share.
