Barilla has officially completed the acquisition of Goodles, a dynamic California-based company that has successfully disrupted the American mac & cheese market. This strategic move, which marks a significant investment of 750 million dollars, underscores the Italian group’s commitment to expanding its presence in the United States by tapping into high-growth, modern food segments.

A strategic move for international growth

The deal, which was reported by Bloomberg and finalized in recent days, positions the Italian pasta giant to compete more effectively against established industry players like Kraft Heinz. Goodles has gained considerable traction by reimagining a classic American staple, focusing on healthier recipes with higher protein content and innovative, bold flavor profiles like Hatch chile and Gouda.

Continuity and future expansion

Following the integration, Goodles will continue to operate as an autonomous brand under its current leadership. Jen Zeszut, who co-founded the startup in Santa Cruz in 2020, will remain at the helm, ensuring that the company’s unique approach to quality and consumer connection remains intact. According to Zeszut, the partnership with the Italian group will provide the necessary resources to scale operations and further penetrate international markets while maintaining the brand’s core identity of creativity and innovation.

Financial details and performance

While the Parma-based group has not disclosed specific financial details, reports suggest the purchase price is about 3.9 times the revenue, with an additional potential payout of at least 100 million dollars tied to future performance milestones. This acquisition reflects a strong bet on niche, premium food brands’ ability to deliver long-term value in the competitive North American retail landscape.
