Plant-based is an increasingly popular trend in world markets, and it has long since ceased to be limited only to vegans and dietary diehards. To intercept the tastes of the modern consumer, Italian food companies are increasingly focusing on this segment, whether they are producers of legume-basedbakery and pastas or ice cream ingredients.

At the Summer Fancy Food Show 2022, Italianfood.net interviewed representatives of Andriani and Città del Gelato on this topic. “We have a direct supply chain of pulses in Apulia, as well as our own mill, to guarantee to our customers a high-quality plant-based pasta,” the Export Sales Director at Andriani, Giovanni Zibillo, said. Andriani’s pasta is mainly made with flours obtained from red lentils and green peas. Recently, the company has launched a “chickpeas spaghetti line, which is very trandy in this moment in the USA,” Zibillo said. Andriani has just won the Italian Food Award USA in the Sustainability category with its Felicia Cauliflower Penne.

However, plant-based is not limited to pulses. Città del Gelato is an Italian company based in Apulia, specializing in the production of gelato ingredients. “In the last year we have been developing a new kind of gelato that we call ‘ketogenic’,” Sales Director Antonio Calò told us, “completely sugar free and carbo free.”
