Three gold medals in the USA for three Italian olive oil labels: ‘Selezione Oli del Mediterraneo’, ‘Collezione di Famiglia’ and ‘Dop Umbria Colli Martani’. These are the prizes won some days ago at the New York International Olive Oil Competition by Farchioni. Since 1780, the Italian olive oil company based in Umbria has been processing the fruits of the earth (olives, grapes, wheat) to obtain high-quality oil, wine, beer and flour at the right price.

A few weeks ago, during the Los Angeles International EVOO Competition, Farchioni also won a silver medal for its ‘Collezione di famiglia’ (Family Collection) olive oil (‘Northern Hemisphere Oils’ category) and a bronze medal for the ‘Selezione Oli del Mediterraneo’ label (Mediterranean Oils Selection – ‘Art/Illustration’ category, in the section dedicated to packaging).

OLIVE OIL: THE TWO USA COMPETITION

The New York International Olive Oil Competition, which opened in 2013, has quickly become the world’s largest and most prestigious olive oil competition. In this year’s edition, which saw the participation of about 900 companies from 26 countries around the world, the international jury evaluated about 1000 samples of extra virgin olive oil.

The Los Angeles International Extra Virgin Olive Oil Competition, now in its 21st edition, is inspired by high standards of integrity and professionalism. It is one of the most prestigious competitions in the United States and the fifth in the world.

These two competitions – explains Marco Farchioni, general manager of the companyrely on a list of very competent judges when it comes to tasting the best extra virgin olive oils. These competitions are the top of the agri-food scene in the USA. Moreover, having extended the competition beyond the borders to olive oils from the northern and southern hemispheres of the world, today they represent an indispensable reference point on a global scale.”

Selezione oli del Mediterraneo

It is a ‘special edition’ made by a personal selection of the best varieties of olives of the company. The result is a fine and genuine oil, fragrant of fresh olives, with a delicate taste, produced with olives grown in the best production areas in Italy and abroad, extremely digestible. Medium fruity, it recalls notes of walnut, eucalyptus, green tea, red pepper and artichoke.

Collezione di famiglia

It is a selection of the company’s best extra virgin olive oils. The olives are harvested by hand and taken to the oil mill in crates. There they are quickly processed to maintain their characteristics and organoleptic properties. Monovarietal based on Coratina cultivar, intensely fruity, with aromas of aromatic herbs, almond, walnut and artichoke.

PDO Umbria Colli Martani

The olives are grown in the dry, stony soils of Umbria and are pressed within 24 hours of harvesting to maintain freshness and preserve all the aromas. The colour ranges from deep green to yellow. This olive oil smells of fresh fruit, flowers, chicory, bitter almond and olive leaf. It is characterized by a rich taste, with bitter and fruity notes. Medium fruity, it is a blend of Frantoio, Leccino, Moraiolo, and San Felice cultivars.
