In 2019, the expected results in terms of exports of Prosciutto San Daniele PDO were confirmed – 18% of total production – showing the consistency of the protection Consortium‘s production activity.

Last year total turnover reached 310 million euros, growing by +1.4% in volume and by +1.6% in value

The total production of this typical Italian cured meat reached 2,600,000 thighs, coming from 54 slaughterhouses that process the raw material provided by 3,851 Italian pig farms. The total turnover reached 310 million euros, growing by +1.4% in volume and by +1.6% in value.

The largest part of the exports turnover recorded ever-increasing numbers. About 4,200 tons of ham were sold. The top importing countries are still France (with a market share of 27%), the United States (19%) where Prosciutto di San Daniele has not been affected by duties, Germany (13%), and Australia (10%).

These are followed by Belgium, Switzerland, Austria, the UK, Japan, Canada, the Netherlands, Luxembourg, and Mexico, where the brand is present and contributes to an increasing expansion of Italy’s cold cuts exports.

EXPORTS TO NON-EU COUNTRIES: THE IMPORTANCE OF FREE TRADE AGREEMENTS

Exports to non-European countries were considerable in 2019, with a 45% share on total exports, which is stable compared to 2018 and higher than in previous years. Even outside Europe, Prosciutto San Daniele PDO is recognized as a high quality and high standards prodct.

The recent free trade agreements signed in non-EU countries, such as CETA in Canada and JEFTA in Japan also gave a great boost, contributing to the fight against counterfeiting.

When it comes to formats, pre-sliced trays have suffered a slight decrease compared to the previous years reaching a total export share of 17%. About 83% of Prosciutto San Daniele PDO is sold abroad as whole ham. In Italy, on the other hand, the consumption of pre-sliced ham trays is growing, reaching 380,769 hams for a total of over 1,812 tons. This is perfectly in line with the new lifestyles and consumption methods, which increasingly prefer ready-to-eat products.
