Prosciutto di San Daniele: an Increasingly Global Success

The first half of 2019 was positive for Prosciutto di San Daniele PDO whose export sales grew by 2% compared to the same period of 2018. This trend increasingly confirms the appreciation for the excellence of Made in Italy food industry on international markets.

SAN DANIELE EXPORTS: TO EU COUNTRIES…

Exports to EU countries decreased slightly (by 3%) compared with the January – June 2018 period. In the first half of 2019 some markets, such as Greece (+192%), Belgium (+39%), and Luxembourg (+3%), reported decidedly positive results, offsetting some slowdowns in other EU countries, such as France (-8%), Germany (-8%), and the United Kingdom (-10%).

… AND TO NON-EU COUNTRIES

In the first half of 2019, exports of Prosciutto di San Daniele to non-EU markets grew by 10%, driven by excellent performances in Canada (+239%), Japan (+29%), Australia (+28%), China (+14%) and the United States (+4%). This trend is due to the entry into force of important free trade agreements such as JEFTA (Japan) and CETA (Canada), with the goal of strengthening trade and economic partnerships through the abolition or reduction of duties, but also by ensuring rules that protect and provide opportunities to all stakeholders.

Sales to non-EU markets show positive and promising results equal to 46% of total exports (compared to 43% in the first half of 2018), given a slight drop in exports to EU countries (54%, compared to 57% in the first six months of 2018).

THE ADVANTAGES OF FREE TRADE AGREEMENTS

The entry into force of bilateral free trade agreements between the EU and third countries certainly represents a positive advantage for the Italian food sector. This is demonstrated by the results obtained by Prosciutto di San Daniele PDO in Canada and Japan – says Mario Emilio Cichetti, Director of the Consortium for the protection of Prosciutto di San Daniele PDO -. Thanks to these agreements, Prosciutto di San Daniele has the opportunity to be present and protected in many different markets.”
