Italy’s Geographical Indications Protected in Singapore

In the framework of the procedure for the entry into force of the Free Trade Agreement between the EU and Singapore, Italy has obtained the registration and protection – by the Intellectual Property Office of Singapore (Ipos) – of 36 Geographical Indications. These include: Balsamic Vinegar of Modena, Prosciutto di Parma, Prosciutto di San Daniele, Asiago, Fontina, Gorgonzola, Grana Padano, Mozzarella di Bufala Campana, Arancia Rossa di Sicilia, Mele dell’Alto Adige, Grappa, Chianti, Franciacorta, Prosecco and many others among the most important Italian denominations of excellence.

This is an important result achieved by the Italian Ministry of Agriculture, in collaboration with the Consortia and producers. The evaluation procedure is now expected to be completed by Ipos for further applications for protection and registration submitted by the Italian Consortia.

The bilateral agreement signed with Singapore – said the Italian Minister of Agriculture Gian Marco Centinaiois a truly significant result for the entire Italian agri-food system. In fact it allows us to have, in a small but rich country, the legal instrument that is necessary to defend our Geographical Indications against counterfeiting which can damage both Italian producers and local consumers.”
