Retailing consolidates in Spain

Retailing is consolidating in Spain. New research from Kantar Worldpanel reports that the six major retailer groups of the country have more than half (53.7%) of the food, drugstore and perfumery market through the first nine months of last year. This represents a 1.2 point increase in market share for the group than in the previous year.

Kantar says that the Dia group and Lidl are the fastest growing retailers in the country. The Dia group increased its market share in the country from 8.2% to 8.7% during the first nine months of last year, Kantar reports. It says that Dia is the second largest retailer in the country with its Dia, El Arbol, La Plaza and Clarel banners. Lidl, the German discounter, increased its market share from 3.1% to 3.5%.

Mercadona, which continues to be the largest retailer, increased its market share from 22.7% to 22.9% last year. Carrefour’s market share climbed from 8.3% to 8.5%, while Grupo Eroski declined one tenth of a point to 6.3% share, following the sale of some of its stores. Auchan’s market share stayed steady at 3.8%, according to Kantar.
