Mortadella Bologna PGI recorded another year of steady expansion in the first nine months of 2025, marking increases across production, sales, and exports despite a still-soft consumption environment. Output rose 3.8%, sales were up 4%, and exports advanced 10.1% compared with the same period in 2024.
Total production climbed from 29.3 million kg last year to 30.45 million kg, while sales increased from just over 24 million kg to more than 25 million kg, reinforcing the product’s strong market position and the continued power of its PGI designation.
PACKAGED PRE-SLICED PRODUCTS CONTINUE TO OUTPERFORM
Consumer preference for convenience is also lifting demand for pre-sliced Mortadella Bologna PGI. Sales of packaged slices grew 3.5%, reflecting rising appreciation among both domestic and international shoppers for ready-to-eat formats.
EXPORTS REMAIN THE ENGINE OF GROWTH
Foreign markets once again delivered the strongest performance. Exports now account for 24% of total sales, with several European countries posting double-digit gains:
- Belgium: +77.2%
- Switzerland: +32.3%
- Spain: +17.6%
Among non-EU destinations, Canada stood out sharply. Following the end of restrictions linked to African swine fever, shipments surged from 3,500 kg in 2024 to more than 25,000 kg in 2025, a jump of +601.8%. Strong growth was also recorded in Poland (+62.8%), Croatia (+45.6%), and the Czech Republic (+15.3%), all fast-expanding markets for the PGI product.
“In a context of declining household purchases, it is a great satisfaction to see Mortadella Bologna PGI continuing to grow, once again driven by exports,” said Guido Veroni, President of the Consortium for the Protection of Mortadella Bologna PGI. He highlighted the resilience of mature markets and the increasingly strategic role of emerging countries, several of which now rank among the top ten EU destinations by volume.
