Parmigiano Reggiano Consortium Targets France for Export Growth

The Parmigiano Reggiano PDO Consortium will step up its international push with participation in the seventh edition of the Mondial du Fromage et des Produits Laitiers in Tours, France, from September 14 to 16, 2025.

The trade show, which last year attracted more than 200 exhibitors and 3,600 professionals, offers a strategic stage for the Italian PDO cheese to consolidate its position in what has become its second-largest export market.

Exports reached a record 72,440 tonnes in 2024, up 13.7 per cent on the previous year. The US remains the largest destination, with growth of 13.4 per cent, while France absorbed nearly 15,000 tonnes, an increase of 9 per cent. France is now the consortium’s top European market and a key hub for further expansion.

The Consortium said its strategy rests on three pillars: tradition, craftsmanship, and training. A centrepiece of this approach is the Parmigiano Reggiano Academy, launched in 2025 as a training and cultural platform for industry professionals. It has already engaged more than 700 employees from leading retailers across ten countries, with the target of doubling that figure by year-end.

At Tours, the Consortium will host workshops on the art of opening and cutting a wheel of Parmigiano (September 14) and on the cheese’s different maturations (September 15). Both sessions will be followed by guided tastings aimed at highlighting the complexity of a product the Consortium describes as “much more than a piece of cheese” — a flagship of Made in Italy.
