Buffalo Mozzarella PDO: the effects of Brexit

Last April, the Consortium obtained the Grant of protection by the Intellectual Property Office of Great Britain. Meanwhile, 2019 was also a year of growth in production (+1.6%) for the typical Italian fresh cheese

Mozzarella di Bufala Campana DOP (Buffalo Mozzarella from Campania PDO) will continue to be protected in the United Kingdom, even after Brexit. The protection Consortium has in fact registered the collective trademark directly in Great Britain, obtaining the national protection.

BUFFALO MOZZARELLA PDO IN NUMBERS

With a volume of 50,176 tons, Buffalo Mozzarella PDO production grew by 1.6% in 2019, thanks to an increase in the production of buffalo milk by 1.5%. A growth not as exciting as that of recent years, which in 2018 had reached 5% over 2017.

A REGISTERED TRADEMARK AT UKIPO

The United Kingdom is the third exports destination country for Italian Buffalo Mozzarella, representing 11.31% of export sales in volume for a turnover of 12 million euros. “We are dealing with a very important partner, which is why the Consortium has already acted quickly to face the new scenarios. Therefore, while waiting for the agreement on the recognition of PDO and PGI products in the UK to be defined, there will be complete protection of the denomination,” said the director of the Consortium, Pier Maria Saccani. However, until December 31 the free movement of goods and people is guaranteed in Great Britain.

“Mozzarella di bufala campana DOP” was already registered as an EU collective trademark (an act regarding all countries considered as a single geographical area). When Brexit hypothesis became concrete, an application for the national protection of the trademark was submitted to Ukipo – the UK Government Intellectual Property Office. The application was finally granted last year, on April 29, thus ensuring the “Grant of Protection” in the United Kingdom.
