The European Commission has proactively addressed trade tensions with the United States by drafting a comprehensive list of products designated for tariff exemption. This initiative seeks to bypass the 15% import duties established under the EU-US trade agreement, ensuring that European high-quality goods remain competitive in the American market.
Boosting European agri-food exports
The Commission emphasizes that the European Union has already fulfilled its obligations by eliminating tariffs on hundreds of industrial and agri-food products from the US starting July 1st. In a reciprocal move, the EU is calling on the United States to apply standard tariff rates to a wide range of Made in EU products. Among the primary focus areas are high-quality agri-food exports, with renowned products such as Roquefort and Pecorino cheese explicitly cited as key priorities for duty-free access.
Diversification of commodities and industrial goods
Beyond traditional dairy, the list includes a diverse array of premium exports. The wine and spirits sector, including sparkling wines, brandy, cider, beer, and premium distillates like whisky, gin, rum, and vodka, stands to benefit significantly. The proposed exemptions also extend to:
- Agri-food: Olives, olive oil, pasta, truffles, and cured meats.
- Seafood: Tuna, smoked salmon, sea bass, and octopus.
- Industrial & Medical: Agricultural machinery, industrial robots, electrical equipment, semiconductors, chemicals, and medical necessities such as surgical sutures and diagnostic kits.
This strategic move by the Commission serves as a vital step in maintaining robust commercial ties, aiming to alleviate financial burdens on importers and distributors while supporting the global expansion of European producers.
