Asiago PDO, production increased by 11% in 2020

In 2020 the overall production of Asiago PDO increased by 11%, with a growth in consumption of +2.2% in volume and +3.4% in value.

This outcome stands in a context of great challenges for the Italian agri-food industry, with a substantial redistribution of consumption channels, considering the backwardness of out-of-home spending (-48%) and the increase in domestic purchase (+7%). Meanwhile, the sales related to delivery increased by 160% and those of e-commerce platforms by 39% compared to 2019.

2020 IN NUMBERS

In this scenario, the Asiago PDO cheese protection Consortium has achieved a production of 1,427,456 wheels of Asiago PDO Fresco (+6% compared to 2019) and 306,241 of Stagionato (+42% compared to 2019). A choice rewarded by purchases: +2.2% compared to 2019 (GFK data), with sales growth of 3.3% for Asiago PDO Fresco and of 25.5% for Stagionato. The enhancement of longer seasonings, even more appreciated by consumers in the Mezzano (4-10 months), Vecchio (10 to 15 months) and Stravecchio (over 15 months) types, is one of the distinctive points of the new production disciplinary, which elevate the cheese quality with more stringent requirements.
