The F&B sector is the only one in Italy resisting the Covid pandemic emergency. The pandemic has collapsed the turnovers of all the other sectors that are protagonists of Made in Italy style, from fashion to cars to furniture.

According to a survey conducted by Mediobanca among 2,800 Italian manufacturing family companies, in 2020 the average drop in turnover for Italian industry is 11.1%. Food companies are the only ones to have seen their revenues increase, becoming the first sector of the country for wealth with an aggregate value that exceeds 538 billion euros.
ALL THE GOOD OF ITALY’S F&B
According to Coldiretti, the Italian F&B guarantees:
- 3.6 million jobs ;
- 25% of GDP;
- 740 thousand active farms;
- 70 thousand food industries;
- over 330 thousand catering companies;
- 230 thousand retail outlets.
Despite the difficulties this supply chain has recorded a continuous growth in exports, reaching a record figure of 44.6 billion euros in 2019 growing by +3% in the first seven months of 2020.
“The global emergency caused by Covid-19 has revealed a widespread awareness of the strategic value represented by food and the necessary guarantees of quality and safety” – says the president of Coldiretti Ettore Prandini. Italy can count on the undisputed leadership in the EU for food quality thanks to 310 PDO, PGI, and TGS specialties rand 415 Doc/Docg wines. Without forgetting the leadership in the organic F&B sector, with over 60 thousand specialized farms, and the world primacy for food safety due to the lower number of agri-food products with irregular chemical residues. Italy is also a leader in biodiversity, with 504 different vine varieties vs 278 in France, and 533 olive cultivars varieties vs 70 in Spain.
