Counterfeit Mozzarella di Bufala in Spain

Immediate intervention by the anti-fraud inspectorate of the Italian Ministry of Agriculture

Counterfeit Italian Mozzarella di Bufala discovered in Spain. The Italian Central Inspectorate for the Suppression of Fraud (ICQRF) of the Italian Ministry of Agriculture has immediately taken action on the European Food Fraud Network platform to alert the Spanish authorities. The case concerned the sale – in Barcelona and in some Catalan food stores – of the local product ‘Bufala de L’Emporda’. Moreover, that mozzarella cheese would be made largely from cow’s milk and not entirely from buffalo milk.

MOZZARELLA DI BUFALA: PROTECTION IN THE EU

Spanish authorities were therefore asked to take prompt action to protect Iberian consumers, as well as the good name of the authentic Italian Mozzarella di Bufala. “Our control system is recognized as one of the best in the world and, once again, we have shown it – commented Gian Marco Centinaio, Italy’s Minister of Agriculture -. I want to thank the inspectors of ICQRF who defend every day the good name of our products with extensive controls on the web. A great teamwork, which sees Italy at the forefront in the protection of consumers and honest producers. We are on their side in this battle”.
