Terenzi to relaunch Morellino di Scansano in China

To make Morellino di Scansano one of the top names both nationally and internationally in the world of winemaking and to value a way of production in the world that remains deliberately niche in order to guarantee quality, this is the mission that Federico, Balbino and Francesca Romana Terenzi have given themselves. They are the three brothers, all under the age of 40, of the Tuscan winery of the same name which was started by their father, Florio. It is a commitment that aims to turn the spotlight onto the area of Maremma, an area which is yet to express much of its potential. There are already results ten years after the first grape harvest: in 2014 export grew in value by 46% and on the Chinese market which is by no means easy, it grew in value by 146%, opening luxury facilities and 5 star hotels. “We really believe in the Chinese market – explains Federico Terenzi, born in 1978, who is leading the company alongside his brothers – where we are solely and exclusively present in the traditional market with particular interest in the hotel and luxury restaurant sector, thanks to the partnership with the importer Montrose Fine Wines. We are looking at this country with a lot of interest, investing more and more every year in order to strive for an ever greater growth.”

Denmark, the country that the Scansano’s Company entered only in March last year, has become an important market both in terms of quality and quantity. Other key markets for the company are Germany, Switzerland, Japan, the Usa, Canada, the Netherlands, Norway, Brazil, Belgium and Russia. In the 52 hectares of the estate, immersed in a landscape which begs to be discovered, the three young brothers produce around 300 thousand bottles every year, all the while fully respecting and protecting the environment. For Terenzi, the attention to eco-sustainability translates into autonomous photovoltaic energy and an integrated agriculture which values the terroir of the estate. The production process, from the running of the vineyards to the harvest of the grapes, from the fermentation to the bottling, is carried out by the company in complete autonomy but with an attention to quality, which is a must as well as a philosophy. The vineyards have different exposures and soil types and many of them are known by name: Cerreto Piano, Crognoleta, Madre Chiesa, Montedonico and Salaioli.

Madre Chiesa is the ‘gran cru’ of Terenzi. Situated in the town of Scansano, it presents a soil rich in Galestri, Palombini, various earthy elements such as marl and marble, layered with clays from the Miocene and Pliocene eras. Characterized by an earth rich in silt, with well-preserved skeletal fossils, that allows the water to drain well and leave the vineyards in optimal water conditions. It is essentially land very well suited to the Sangiovese grape because it gives colour and warmth to the wine, guaranteeing complete and complex maturation and allowing harvest towards the beginning of October. It is here that the grapes are harvested by hand and give life to Madrechiesa Morellino di Scansano Riserva Docg, one of the company’s best-selling wines.
