Brexit: UK bans import of ground meat

The Italian Trade Agency (ITA) has officially announced that the British Meat Industry has imposed a ban on the export to the UK of fresh and frozen ground meat and minced meat preparations. “From next April 1st – reads the official ITA statement – prohibitions & restrictions will be fully applied on POAO (Products Of Animal Origin), as for any other third country. EU traders will not be able to export chilled minced meat (beef, lamb, pork, poultry), frozen minced meat (poultry), and chilled meat preparations (all species).”

However, ITA points out that the ban does not apply to the most popular cooked meat products and cured meats. In fact salami, cured sausage, raw and cooked ham, bresaola, speck, bacon, coppa, mortadella, nduja, etc. are not subject to this ban, and can be traded regularly. As these products are cured or cured and cooked, they are part of meat products and not of preparations. On the contrary it is forbidden to export raw sausages to the UK, as these are considered as meat preparations.
